Our Team

Carol Johnson, Executive Director

It's hard to believe I've been with the EBRPD for 17 years! Having grown up in San Leandro, I've been an EBRPD fan my entire life! Having a chance to represent an agency whose mission I strongly believe in makes me feel great and eager to get to work. Knowing that our programs and projects meaningfully enhance the quality of someone's life is humbling. Engaging with our park users is what I like best about my job!

My favorite park is Lake Temescal in Oakland because of its tranquil beauty set between two very busy freeways. When I'm at Temescal to swim, fish or hike, I don't hear noise of traffic. I just hear birds and smell the freshness of nature. I love all the programs supported by the Foundation but the Kids Healthy Outdoors Challenge, getting children into nature and out of their classrooms to learn the basics is a gift. In my spare time, I play with my puppy Rudolph and teach him to respect the animals in nature. I am a convenience camper … meaning my kids and I prefer to sleep in a cabin with a bathroom!

Juliana Schirmer, Development Director

I landed my dream job working for the Regional Parks Foundation in 2015. I was raised in the East Bay and one of my fondest childhood memories was camping in the Sunol Regional Wilderness. I've dedicated my life to working with wonderful nonprofit organizations as an administrator and fundraiser and when the opportunity came to help raise funds to support the parks, wildlife preservation and programs for youth I knew it was the perfect fit! The best part of my job is connecting people and their passion for giving with the wonderful programs at the Regional Parks Foundation.

Whether people support open space, the environment, or opportunities for under-resourced youth – we have many award winning programs to offer! My dream is to hike every park and trail in EBRPD and in my spare time I enjoy time with my family, hiking in remote parks, backpacking, and long road trips.

Michele Kageura, Membership Officer

I believe in the mission of the Regional Parks Foundation and I joined the team in 2014 to help grow the Membership Program. I like knowing that I am a part of something larger than myself and that my contributions are helping further the mission of the Foundation. I live in the South Bay, but I often spend time with my family in Coyote Hills Regional Park where I take long leisurely walks with friends and family. I love all the programs the Foundation supports but I have a soft spot for the Campership programs. In my spare time I enjoy interior decorating, crafts, shopping and leisurely walks and I like to help a variety of causes from health care to cultural institutions.

Catherine Bernal, Foundation Administrator

After recognizing that my love of being in nature coupled with my desire to help others would make this work a natural fit for me, I pursued a career with the Regional Parks, and to my excitement, was hired in 2016. The mission of the Foundation resonates strongly with me. I believe that nature has a healing power that all people should have access to. I see the Foundation's focus on environmental education and programming for under-served youth as crucial to engendering a generation that will care for the natural world around them.

Hiking has long been one of my favorite pastimes. Prior to working here, I had visited 13 parks and set a goal (much like Juliana above) to eventually visit all parklands within the District. I am now up to 25 and counting! While I love to hike and take photos of plants and animals on my adventures, my favorite activity I have done in the parks thus far has to be stand up paddle boarding at Del Valle.
