Mobile Incidence Command Center (MICC)

As one of the largest urban regional park systems in the world, with estimated 25-million visitors annually, the sheer volume of land and number of people visiting the East Bay Regional Parks every year poses challenges when it comes to public safety and police patrol. To ensure the safety of park visitors, the Park District’s Public Safety Division maintains a fleet of rapid response vehicles including fire engines, ATV’s, boats, motorcycles, and helicopters. The Public Safety Division responds to incidents ranging from homicides and wildfires to boating accidents and lost hikers. The variety of requests for support require a flexible, nimble emergency response capability including the capacity to coordinate air, ground and aquatic resources.

Since 2000, the Park District has operated a Mobile Incident Command Center (MICC) to coordinate emergency response. This vehicle serves as a command and communication hub and includes various modes of communication such as radar, audio and video feeds. As the vehicle approached the end of its service-life, the Park District Board of Directors authorized the effort to find a replacement vehicle. However, the cost of the replacement vehicle exceeded the budget by about $75,000. To bridge the funding gap, Tesoro Foundation stepped in with a gift to the Regional Parks Foundation to assist the Park District acquire a new state-of-the-art MICC. With this new vehicle, the Park District police force is able to continue to swiftly respond to emergencies to save lives and property for years.
