New for 2011

This year we are featuring 20 trails in 20 different Regional Parks/Trails to go along with our 2011 "Picturesque Parks" theme. The trails are designed to be less challenging while encouraging people to explore their own routes in the parks to discover each park's Picturesque qualities. There are some map reading tips for trail explorers. This is different from 2010, when 30 trails were featured in 10 different Regional Parks/Trails. If you prefer the old format, we have provided access to previous year's booklets.

The “Picturesque Parks” theme allows for a new interactive element to the Trails Challenge. We want to see what you have discovered and are encouraging you to post your pictures on the East Bay Regional Park District’s Flickr Web page to share with others. People can view the photos, comment on them, and share with friends. We will also use the pictures in the Google Maps web page to help participants have a better idea of the park’s current status. Become a District fan on Facebook, too, so that you can get various East Bay Regional Park District announcements, many of which will be Trails Challenge related.

Another new feature for 2011 is a Trails Challenge mobile app. We will be launching it mid-spring. This app will allow Trails Challenge 2011 participants to download trail information straight to their iPhones, keep track of what trails they have completed, earn virtual rewards, and share information about their trail experiences with others. Please check back in March 2011 for details on how to access this new Trails Challenge feature.

In addition, we are introducing two new free guided hiking programs ‘Healthy Hikes’ and ‘Hiking with Kids.’ Each program will have an emphasis on staying fit and thriving! EBRPD offers a variety of guided hikes for many different types of trail users, so be sure to check out the Guided Hikes section of the guidebook and the District’s Activity Guide for upcoming programs and events.
